Clean technology entrepreneurs go through bootcamp in West Michigan

Grand Valley State University recently was the site of the first entrepreneurship “bootcamp” in the Midwest focusing on “green technology.”

According to one of the organizers, Tim Streit of Huron River Ventures, “green technology” (also referred to as clean technology) is a specialized sector of technology focused on tech solutions that enable businesses to use less energy through efficiencies or to create energy from alternative sources.

Huron River Ventures: Locked, Loaded, and Ready to Invest In Cleantech

The boys are back in town.

Fresh from the high finance worlds of Chicago and New York, University of Michigan grads Tim Streit and Ryan Waddington have returned to the state to launch Huron River Ventures (HRV), a $15 million fund aimed squarely at cleantech startups.

HRV has so far raised half of the money it needs to complete the fund.

ARM, Cisco, Others Back Ambiq Micro

Ambiq Micro Inc., a 2010 Microcontroller startup, has announced it has received a $2.4 million in venture capital funding from backers that include ARM Holdings plc and Cisco Inc. The seed funding round was LED by DFJ Mercury. Other investors include: ARM, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Cisco, The Frankel Fund, Huron River Ventures and a number of undisclosed private investors.

The money will enable the expansion of engineering, sales and marketing teams, the company said.

Ambiq Micro Closes $2.4 Million Seed Round For Efficient Micro-controllers

DFJ Mercury led a seed investment round of $2.4 million in Ambiq Micro, the companies announced today. Ambiq has designed and manufactures durable, highly efficient micro-controllers that can be used in everything from smoke and temperature sensors in smart buildings, to smart credit cards and smart phones.

The company was founded at the University of Michigan by Dennis Sylvester and David Blaauw, professors of electrical engineering and computer science at the University’s College of Engineering, and Scott Hanson, a post-doctoral Fellow at the College of Engineering who is the company’s chief executive.

Meet Ann Arbor’s newest VC firm: Huron River Ventures

“Venture capital” is becoming Ann Arbor’s buzz words these days. Local start-ups are  raising VC funds and new VC firms setting up shop here in Tree Town. Add Huron River Ventures to that list.

Two University of Michigan graduates, Ryan Waddington and Tim Streit, are setting up the downtown Ann Arbor-based venture capital firm. The two friends have worked in seed capital jobs across the country for years, ranging from DTE Energy Ventures to HSBC New Business Development, giving them backgrounds in both investment and clean technology.

Ann Arbor VC fund to get $6 million state investment

An Ann Arbor-based venture-capital fund will receive a $6 million injection from the Michigan Strategic Economic Investment and Commercialization Board, that panel said in a memo on Monday.

The newly formed Huron River Ventures is an investment fund that focuses on alternative energy and other high-tech sectors in the state.
